St. Charles Restaurant Linked to 13 Cases of Salmonella Food Poisoning

Portillo’s Restaurant in St. Charles, Illinois is believed to be the source of Salmonella bacteria that has resulted in 13 illnesses so far.  The victims range in age from 17 to 64, 9 of them being female.  Of the 13 that received a salmonella diagnosis with Salmonella, 9 reported having eaten at the St. Charles restaurant in April.  Three of the victims had been hospitalized but have since been released.

As of Friday May 13th, no specific food item had been targeted as the source of the Salmonella contamination.  Management staff of Portillo’s is cooperating with the Kane health department and other state officials in the investigation.  Food handlers at the restaurant are being tested for infection.  The restaurant was sanitized and all food items have been discarded other than samples collected for testing by the Kane County health department.

Employees being tested will not be able to return to work at the restaurant until they have provided two samples for testing taken 24 hours apart that show they are not infected with Salmonella.  The restaurant remains open, and has called in workers from other locations while regular food handlers are being tested.

Salmonella food poisoning typically causes only mild symptoms in healthy adults which may include abdominal cramps, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.  Young children, elderly adults and those with a weakened immune system may be at a higher risk of developing serious and even life-threatening complications.  You can always help to prevent salmonella food poisoning by making sure your food is well cooked at home and in a restaurant.  If you ever believe you may have contracted food poisoning, make sure you obtain treatment as soon as possible.
