Sprouts Linked Once Again to Salmonella Outbreak Across 5 States

Once again, sprouts are in the news after several people across 5 states become ill after consuming the sprouts.  This time, alfalfa sprouts and spicy sprouts seem to be the culprits.  Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC of Idaho recently recalled the sprouts which were distributed in Idaho and Washington.  According to the FDA, testing of the sprouts is still pending.

As of June 27th there have been 21 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis reported, three of the individuals being hospitalized.  These outbreaks have been reported in Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota and Washington.  After investigating it seems that the common food consumed by those who fell ill were sprouts, although samples tested of the Evergreen sprouts have not tested positive as of this time.

U.S. health regulators advised people on June 27th not to eat sprouts under the Evergreen Produce label, which may be solid in plastic bags.  While sprouts have been in the news recently particularly in the  massive outbreak in Europe, this outbreak is a separate incident and not related.  Article drafted by Dataflurry on behalf of the Buffalo injury attorneys at Brown Chiari.

Since 1996 there have been at least 30 outbreaks of foodborne illnesses that have been reported that are linked to raw or lightly cooked sprouts, most of these related to Salmonella and E. Coli according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Salmonella food poisoning typically produces symptoms that include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever and nausea.  Individuals usually experience these symptoms within a few days of eating foods contaminated with the bacteria.  While the illness is usually not serious for healthy individuals, those with a compromised immune system, young children and the elderly may be at increased risk of serious complications.
