Pine Nuts Recalled by Wegmans Following Salmonella Outbreak

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 42 people across six states have become ill with Salmonella after consuming Turkish pine nuts.  Wegmans Food Markets has recently recalled 5,000 pounds of the pine nuts, which were sold in the bulk foods sections of stores in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia between July 1st and October 18th of this year.

To date, no deaths have been linked to the Salmonella food poisoning outbreak.  The pine nuts were imported by Sunrise Commodities, an Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey company.

Consumers in every state that the pine nuts were distributed in have become ill, and one person in Arizona was affected.  So far, 26 people in New York have become ill, 8 in Pennsylvania, 4 in Virginia, 2 in New Jersey and 1 in Maryland.  These cases were reported by the CDC from late August through September 28th.  According to the agency, all illnesses may not have been reported to date because of the length of time it takes for symptoms to appear after a person becomes infected.

Those who have become ill thus far range in age from 1 to 94 years, with the median age being 43 years.  Two patients were hospitalized with their illnesses; 57% of those who became ill are females.

Salmonella causes symptoms that mimic stomach flu; these symptoms often include nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea and occasional fever.  Individuals with weakened immune systems or who are very young or elderly may be at an increased risk of complications.
