A St. Louis, Missouri company, Front Row Produce, has recalled grape tomatoes due to the potential of Salmonella contamination. The recall, announced on December 1st, involves 10 ounce pints and 10 lb. bulk grape tomatoes supplied by Rio Queen Citrus, a Mission, Texas company. Salmonella is an organism that produces symptoms that mimic stomach flu, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and occasional fever. Certain individuals are at risk of developing serious or fatal complications including very young children, those who are elderly or those who have a weakened immune system.

The grape tomatoes involved in this recall were distributed throughout Illinois and Missouri to retail stores and foodservice distributors. Description of the products are as follows:

10 lb. bulk grape tomatoes are packaged in a plain cardboard box labeled with lot #2310801. These grape tomatoes were packaged for wholesale and foodservice distribution.

Products for retail sale are packaged in 10 oz. clear plastic packages. At the current time, the lot number is on the case label, but does not appear on the clear plastic individual packages. The package is marked with a label on top marked “Front Row Produce Grape Tomatoes.” The lot numbers marked on the case labels include 2310802, 2310405 or 2510401.

As of the date of the recall, all further shipments of the 10 oz. plastic packaged grape tomatoes will have a green lot number sticker located on the bottom side of the package. Consumers are advised not to purchase packages without lot numbers or green stickers, as these packages may be under recall. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the tainted grape tomatoes.

The contamination was detected during random testing by Rio Queen Citrus, which revealed that Salmonella bacteria was present in some of the 20 pound bulk containers.

Currently, production of the grape tomatoes has been suspended while Front Row Produce and the FDA continue to investigate in order to determine the source of the Salmonella.

As experienced New York food poisoning attorneys, Brown Chiari realizes the serious implications that consuming tainted foods can have on those who are most at risk. In some circumstances, the organisms can make their way into the bloodstream which can result in endocarditis, arthritis and arterial infections.

If you have become ill after eating contaminated foods, you may be entitled to compensation of costs related to your illness. Contact the New York food poisoning lawyers at Brown Chiari today for a free evaluation of your claim.

Recently, 29 people have been treated at Magnolia Regional Medical Center in Corinth, Mississippi after developing symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning. While there is currently no work on what strain is involved in this outbreak, it certainly seems as if there must be a common source that is making so many people sick. It isn’t clear at this point if health officials know that the illnesses are related, but one restaurant has suspiciously closed its doors recently – Don Julios, a popular Mexican restaurant in the area.

The restaurant voluntarily closed its doors, although it isn’t known for certain at this time if the restaurant is indeed the source of the Salmonella outbreak. ABC news in Corinth recently reported that the Department of Health has confirmed 29 reported cases of Salmonella, and that these reports did not seem to deter residents from eating at their favorite local restaurants including Ryan’s, McDonald’s and Sonic. While it isn’t known why at this point, many residents are suspicious that Don Julio’s restaurant may have been at the center of the Salmonella illnesses.

According to the Sun Herald, a sign on the door at the restaurant stated that health officials had found no evidence of food contamination at the restaurant, and it was not ordered to close. However, owners of the restaurant were concerned about possible contamination of vegetables from a supplier the restaurant uses, and the restaurant closed due to concerns about customer safety.

A health department spokeswoman on Wednesday said that Don Julio’s and all other restaurants where victims who were confirmed to have Salmonella claimed to have eaten will come under close scrutiny. Hopefully, the source of the Salmonella outbreak will come to light in coming days, and no other individuals will become ill.

Salmonella is a foodborne bacterial infection that is contracted from foods that are contaminated such as poultry, beef, eggs, milk and vegetables. While most people suffer only mind symptoms that require no treatment, certain individuals including young children, the frail or elderly and those with a weakened immune symptoms are at a higher risk of developing serious complications.

Recently, 14 individuals in several states have become ill after eating ground beef products produced and sold by Hannaford stores. The company has issued a broad recall for the fresh ground beef products it sells, including:

Hannaford brand 73%, 75%, 80%, 85%, and 90% lean regular ground beef

Taste of Inspirations Angus 80%, 85% and 90% lean ground beef

Nature’s Place 85% and 90% lean ground beef

The ground beef products in question appear to be that purchased during the months of October and November, but spokesman Mike Norton stated that the stored chose to include ground beef products with a sell-by date up to and including December 17th using an abundance of caution.

The four states that have had individuals become ill include Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. In Maine, four people became ill, two having to be hospitalized according to Maine epidemiologist Dr. Stephen Sears.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s FSIS stated on Friday December 16th in a press release that salmonella illnesses had been reported in the four states mentioned above, and that 10 of the 14 who became ill had bought ground beef products at Hannaford’s between the dates of October 12th and November 20th.

Salmonella Typhimurium, the strain that the bacteria was determined to be, is unusual and somewhat resistant to antibiotics, according to Sears. He said that it is not a strain that he has seen before. At the time of the recall, the USDA was continuing to investigate and had yet to determine the source of contamination of the fresh ground beef products. Officials were not certain as to the total pounds of meat subject to the recall.

The FSIS stated, “11 of those (14) individuals reported consuming ground beef. Seven individuals were hospitalized and no deaths have been reported.”

The company is concerned that some consumers may have the product in their freezers, and urge them to return the packages marked with a sell-by date of December 17th or earlier to any Hannaford store for a full refund. Customers with questions or concerns may call Hannaford’s customer information center at 1-800-213-9040, option 6.

Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning are usually mild and may including nausea, fever and chills, diarrhea and abdominal pain. While most people experience a short-lived, mild illness, Salmonella can be fatal to some individuals who develop complications. These individuals include young children, those with weakened immune systems and the elderly.

Those who have become ill and suspect food poisoning should contact the New York food poisoning attorneys at Brown Chiari to discuss your case and learn if you may be eligible for compensation of costs associated with your illness. Brown Chiari is a team of talented New York Injury Attorneys located in Buffalo & Lancaster NY.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 42 people across six states have become ill with Salmonella after consuming Turkish pine nuts. Wegmans Food Markets has recently recalled 5,000 pounds of the pine nuts, which were sold in the bulk foods sections of stores in Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia between July 1st and October 18th of this year.

To date, no deaths have been linked to the Salmonella food poisoning outbreak. The pine nuts were imported by Sunrise Commodities, an Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey company.

Consumers in every state that the pine nuts were distributed in have become ill, and one person in Arizona was affected. So far, 26 people in New York have become ill, 8 in Pennsylvania, 4 in Virginia, 2 in New Jersey and 1 in Maryland. These cases were reported by the CDC from late August through September 28th. According to the agency, all illnesses may not have been reported to date because of the length of time it takes for symptoms to appear after a person becomes infected.

Those who have become ill thus far range in age from 1 to 94 years, with the median age being 43 years. Two patients were hospitalized with their illnesses; 57% of those who became ill are females.

Salmonella causes symptoms that mimic stomach flu; these symptoms often include nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea and occasional fever. Individuals with weakened immune systems or who are very young or elderly may be at an increased risk of complications.

On Tuesday, November 8th, the CDC announced that a NY establishment, Schreiber Processing Corporation, was recalling an unspecified amount of broiled chicken liver products recently linked to Salmonella illnesses in New York and New Jersey. Since April 1st of this year, 93 cases have been reported in New York and 64 in New Jersey.

The Salmonella illnesses began around March 13th of this year, affecting an age range that spans from less than 1 year old to 97 years old. The average age of those affected is 10 years old, and 52% of those who became ill were female. Although no deaths have been reported in association with these illnesses, according to available information 21 individuals were hospitalized.

Schreiber Processing Corporation of Maspeth, NY announced on November 8th that the company was recalling an undetermined amount of their kosher broiled chicken liver products. The chicken livers in question appear to the consumer to be ready to eat, but are only partially cooked and require further cooking before eating.

A link to the chicken liver products was made by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. The company also makes chopped liver from the chicken liver products which is sold at retail stores. The chopped liver also tested positive for Salmonella, so it is concerning that these products will not bear the original packaging information because they have been repackaged.

Illnesses were also reported in Maryland, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, although the majority were in New York and New Jersey. Product included in the recent recall include:

10 pound boxes containing 5 lb. bags of Meal Mart Broiled Chicken Liver Made for Further Thermal Processing

10 pound boxes of Chicken Liver Broiled, loose packed

Each box or bag contains the establishment number “P-787″ inside the USDA mark of inspection according to the CDC. The FSIS is continuing to work with the Food and Drug Administration as well as New York and other states in this ongoing investigation.

An outbreak of Salmonella Heidelberg that is resistant to antibiotics was announced earlier this summer, traced to ground turkey products produced by food giant Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation. Now, a lawsuit has been filed by two Missouri residents who became ill after consuming the tainted ground turkey. If you have been injured, be sure to seek out medical treatment for your salmonella poisoning. You can prevent salmonella by thoroughly cooking foods. Salmonella Diagnosis is made by testing at a local clinic or hospital.

So far there have been 111 people across 31 states in the U.S. who have become ill with the strain of Salmonella after eating the products between February 20th and August 2nd of this year. In the lawsuit it is alleged that Cargill was aware of a Salmonella Heidelberg problem at its plant in Springdale, Arkansas and that Salmonella may have been detected at the facility as far back as 2007. It is also alleged that Cargill failed to alert consumers of the risks and potential dangers of consuming products that could possibly be infected.

Prior to this lawsuit being filed there were 111 reported cases that included one death. A breakdown of the states and number of illnesses related in each are as follows:

Alabama (1), Arkansas (1), Arizona (3), California (6), Colorado (3), Georgia (2), Illinois (14), Indiana (1), Iowa (2), Kansas (1), Kentucky (2), Louisiana (1), Massachusetts (3), Maryland (1), Michigan (12), Minnesota (2), Mississippi (1), Missouri (4), Nebraska (2), Nevada (1), New York (2), North Carolina (3), Ohio (10), Oklahoma (2), Oregon (1), Pennsylvania (5), South Dakota (3), Tennessee (2), Texas (15), Utah (1), and Wisconsin (4).

The outbreak resulted in a recall of more than 36,000,000 pounds of turkey products.

According to Cargill, production of the ground turkey products ceased at the Springdale location until the source of the contamination could be determined and corrective action taken. Cargill also owns 3 other turkey processing facilities in the United States, and claims that only products produced at the Springdale, Arkansas plant were affected.

Once again, sprouts are in the news after several people across 5 states become ill after consuming the sprouts. This time, alfalfa sprouts and spicy sprouts seem to be the culprits. Evergreen Fresh Sprouts, LLC of Idaho recently recalled the sprouts which were distributed in Idaho and Washington. According to the FDA, testing of the sprouts is still pending.

As of June 27th there have been 21 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis reported, three of the individuals being hospitalized. These outbreaks have been reported in Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota and Washington. After investigating it seems that the common food consumed by those who fell ill were sprouts, although samples tested of the Evergreen sprouts have not tested positive as of this time.

U.S. health regulators advised people on June 27th not to eat sprouts under the Evergreen Produce label, which may be solid in plastic bags. While sprouts have been in the news recently particularly in the massive outbreak in Europe, this outbreak is a separate incident and not related. Article drafted by Dataflurry on behalf of the Buffalo injury attorneys at Brown Chiari.

Since 1996 there have been at least 30 outbreaks of foodborne illnesses that have been reported that are linked to raw or lightly cooked sprouts, most of these related to Salmonella and E. Coli according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Salmonella food poisoning typically produces symptoms that include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever and nausea. Individuals usually experience these symptoms within a few days of eating foods contaminated with the bacteria. While the illness is usually not serious for healthy individuals, those with a compromised immune system, young children and the elderly may be at increased risk of serious complications.

If you have become ill after consuming foods that may have been tainted with Salmonella or other bacteria, contact the New York food poisoning attorneys at Brown Chiari. You may be entitled for compensation of medical costs and other expenses related to your illness.

As of Friday May 13th, no specific food item had been targeted as the source of the Salmonella contamination. Management staff of Portillo’s is cooperating with the Kane health department and other state officials in the investigation. Food handlers at the restaurant are being tested for infection. The restaurant was sanitized and all food items have been discarded other than samples collected for testing by the Kane County health department.

Employees being tested will not be able to return to work at the restaurant until they have provided two samples for testing taken 24 hours apart that show they are not infected with Salmonella. The restaurant remains open, and has called in workers from other locations while regular food handlers are being tested.

Recently, Del Monte Fresh Produce of Coral Gables, Florida recalled 4,992 cartons of cantaloupes due to their potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Panama. These cartons each contained 4 plastic sleeves with 3 cantaloupes per sleeve. The products were distributed to Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. The cantaloupes were sold at Costco stores in these states; the FDA believes that the batch involved were grown in Guatemala.

According to the FDA, the cantaloupes were recalled due to an epidemiologic link between the fruit and approximately 12 cases of Salmonella Panama that were reported. Del Monte put production of the cantaloupes on hold and ceased distributing the product from this particular farm. At the time this recall was released, the FDA and Del Monte Fresh Produce were continuing to investigate what caused the contamination, as well as whether the illnesses were indeed linked to the cantaloupes.

Lot codes on the dark brown cardboard boxes include 02-15-24-10, 02-15-25-10, 02-15-26-10 and 02-15-28-10. These cartons contain 4 plastic beige mesh sleeves sealed with a plastic orange handle. The Del Monte logo and “3 count, product of Guatemala” will also be found on the sleeves. The cantaloupes involved in this recall were available for sale between March 10th and March 21st of this year.

Salmonella food poisoning typically produces only mild symptoms in healthy individuals, such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and dehydration. These symptoms usually begin within 72 hours of consuming tainted foods. Symptoms usually last 3 to 7 days, but some individuals are at an increased risk of developing serious complications. These individuals include the very young, the elderly and those with a compromised immune system.
